Maryland STARS Schedule Overview |
| This page provides a brief overview of a year in the Maryland STARS.
September: Yes we start the year in September as we hold tryouts for next calendar year's teams. Tryouts consist of up to three tryouts with prospective players required to participate in at least two of the tryout sessions for their age group. Players are notified of the results of the tryouts within 10 days of the date of the last tryout for their age group. September - October: The STARS play a short fall season. This may include some league play for the younger teams and 2-4 tournaments for the older teams. Practices are limited to no more than one per week. No weekend practices are held. November or December: STARS teams hold a fundraiser. This may be some type of item sale, a dance, a bingo, or some other type. All proceeds go directly to the teams in the STARS program to pay the costs of tournament fees, uniform and equipment costs, and other team expenses. December - February: STARS coaches attend clinics to develop their skills and knowledge about the game so that they can better assist the players in developing. January - March: The STARS acquire time at a local high school or middle school gym and begin indoor practices focusing on individual fundamentals. At this time the STARS attempt to acquire the services of experts in their field (examples: Michelle Neveling, UMBC, for hitting, Ernie Parker, Bill Dryden, Jack Crandell and Samantha Abrams for pitching) and provide optional clinics for the program's players. These indoor practices are limited to 2 hours per week and typically held on Saturday or Sunday afternoons. February through April: STARS hold another fundraiser to benefit the program. April - middle of May: STARS teams begin to practice outside. Practices are typically held once during the weekend, but for the younger teams there may also be a weekday practice. High School players are exempt from weekday practices until their high school season is over. May - end of July: STARS teams participate in tournaments most of these weekends (a total of 8-10 tournaments in all). The teams also practice at least once per week (in most cases twice per week) in the evenings. The tournament season is typically capped off with a trip to a national tournament (either ASA, USSSA, NSA, PONY, AFA or FAST). June and July: The STARS also host at least two tournaments per season that act as fundraisers to keep costs to the players and parents down. |
