Maryland STARS Girls Fastpitch Softball

Player Benefits
The Maryland STARS Girls Fastpitch Softball Tournament Team Program is an organization devoted to fielding competitive teams at all age groups to compete in local and national tournaments. By providing trained coaches, excellent equipment and facilities, using experts in their fields to provide the players and coaches with instructional clinics, and coordinating the activities of all of the teams in the program, the Maryland STARS provide a unique environment for players to learn the game, develop their skills, increase the experience and exposure, make memories and friends, and just plain have fun while becoming top players.

Unlike most select softball teams and "programs" in the area, the Maryland STARS are not a one year team or a team organized by a group of parents for the benefits of their daughters. The STARS are an organization of tightly knit teams sharing common goals of success and working closely together to achieve these goals.

Some of the coaches no longer have daughters playing in the program, but continue to stay involved nonetheless. In other cases former players have returned to assist with the coaching of teams or to simply act as demonstrators.

The STARS are part of the Winfield Youth Softball Organization which falls under the Carroll County Department of Enterprise and Recreation. Thus field time, insurance, and other necessities vital to a successful program are assured each year.

The STARS bring in experts in their field to provide clinics to the players. Some of these instructors include Michelle Neveling, former WPSL player and former UMBC Head Softball Coach, Jack Crandell, Jim Rhinehart, Bill dryden, Ernie Parker, and Joe Matthews, authorities on fastpitch pitching, and others when they are available. Jaime Wohlbach, former Philadelphia Force player and current head Softball coach at Iona University provides a catching clinic for the Stars.

The STARS enter their 11th year of play.

The program is established and has fielded teams that have won tournaments and competed successfully at the national level. Players who have progressed through the program now play for their college teams and carry the STARS banner to greater heights.

The STARS have teams at 10, 12, 14, 16, 18&under and over 18. Thus a player can proceed with the program after becoming too old to play at a specific level.

The STARS web page provides a way to promote players who desire to continue their softball careers after high school. The STARS continually train their coaches via clinics from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) and National Sports Clinics. Thus these coaches can pass along the latest knowledge of the game to the players. No more "this is the way I was taught to play the game way back when I was a kid".

The STARS play ASA, PONY, USSSA, NSA, Triple Crown, and FAST tournaments in and around the state and also regularly attend national tournaments to give their players a chance to play at the highest level possible. This develops experience, respect and confidence among the players.
